Gemstone Identification Basics

This 3-day intensive course provides a unique opportunity to learn basic practical coloured gem identification skills, using standard gem testing techniques utilising equipment such as;
- 10x lens
- Polariscope
- Refractometer
The Gemmology Basics course is designed to be an introduction to practical Gemmology for those considering studying this interesting subject. With step-by-step practical instruction you will learn basic identification skills to help you to distinguish between natural, synthetic and imitation gems.
Discover more about the world of gemstones, by observing and handling a variety of stones.

All the necessary gem material, tools/equipment is provided during the course. Course handouts will also be provided by the tutor.
​
This Course is ideal for anyone working in jewellery workshops or in retail or for those who are enthusiastic in this subject.
Whilst Gemmological experience is advantageous, students do not require previous Gemmological knowledge in order to participate and benefit from this Course.

This 3-day course follows the principles as set out by the Gemmological Association (Gem-A.)
A suitable course for use as a stepping stone between the Gem-A’s more theoretical Foundation Practical Certificate Gemmology Course and the Gemmology Diploma Course.
NOTE
The course content for Gemstone Identification Basics does not include tuition on Pearls or about Diamonds & Grading.
These are specialist areas and are available as stand-alone courses.

Up to 4 students may be attending this course, due to content, numbers are deliberately limited by the tutor. This course will still run regardless of student numbers attending in which case you will benefit from more tuition time with the tutor.

Course date: This course runs several times a year, please request the next course date if you would like to book. If you are the first student enrolling, we will set a new course date upon request to suit.

What is the course date?
The course date is chosen by you, so that you can undertake a tuition session at your convenience. We will provide some date options as per the availability of the tutor.
All dates / times of course sessions are subject to tutor availability.

Session start times are generally 10am or 1pm GMT London Time, however it may be possible to adjust these times slightly, please ask if necessary.

About the Course Fee
A large portion of the course fee quoted is paid to the tutor, because, it’s their expertise that you pay for.
​
Where there is a selection of tutors, course fee's may vary due to individual tutor requirements for teaching.
In addition a there is a small fee for arranging your course which is included in the total course fee.

Payment
Course fee payment is required in advanced by BACS Bank Transfer invoice or IBAN for international students.

Vat/Tax is not applicable

Tuition is one-to-one, interactive and delivered via Zoom. Fully guided tuition by the tutor using enlarge imagery so that you can easily see the tiny structural detail within stones.

Payment Terms
Payment is required in advance and payments are handled safely and securely by BACS Bank Transfer invoicing (IBAN for International students.

Instalments
Some courses are available to pay in instalments, whereby a non-refundable deposit is required to book your course date. Please ask for details if this is of interest to you.
Booking Terms

Once you have booked a cancellation fee of £280* will be deducted from your refund if you cancel your course up to and including 14 days prior to the start of the course once your payment has been received.

Cancellations received within 14 days of the course date are not eligible for a refund, however you may re-arrange your course for one other date if you wish.

Should we need to cancel your course due to unforeseen circumstances we will refund your course fee in full.
