Smelting (Melting Silver / Gold)
-
Casting in Sand (Delft Clay type)
Wax Carving
To begin you will receive guided practical step-by-step instruction for learning the carving/sculpting methods and the use of a variety tools to create a wax model suitable for casting. Your skill in creating refined fine detail comes with practise of the techniques learned after the course, however your tuition in this course covers all the essential techniques you need to get started modelling your own designs in Wax.
Option Gems: You may like to include small gemstones in your wax models and you can ask the tutor the possibility and cost to include this technique option in your tuition.
Delft Clay/Sand Casting
This type of mouldable clay allows wax models to be pressed into its surface without losing shape, allowing for sharper casting outcomes. To start you will learn about the preparation and making of a delft sand/ clay frame and how to create the impression in clay/sand from your wax model. During this process you will be learning best practice casting for the making of sprues, air holes, and for carving out a casting channel, all in preparation for pouring the molten metal.
The tutor will guide your practice of calculating casting precious metal quantity for your model and the preparation of heating your precious metal ready for pouring into the mould. Once your cast metal model has hardened you will learn how to remove casting sprues and clean and polish your precious metal cast model ready for use.
Materials: Metals (Silver/ Gold) are not provided because we cannot determine before your course how much you will use for the design of your choice. You therefore pay the tutor for the precious metal you use during the course. You may bring your own precious metals, but you must speak to the tutor in advance to advise what you are bringing.
A very useful, inspiring course with step-by step instruction and many tips of the trade from an expert specialist tutor.
