Course Description

This two day course introduces you to the engraved relief style mark making and basic enamelling techniques associated with the Champlevé and Basse Taille styles of Enamelling. On this course you will be creating engraved and enamelled sample designs on Silver to practice these techniques.

Day One

The emphasis of day one is Engraving and Mark Making. You will begin the day by learning the design methodology for enamelled designs on silver for Champlevé style (engraved channels) and/or Basse Taille style (layered depth cuts),

Your practical tuition begins with learning how to transfer simple designs onto sheet metal; understanding the importance of tool sharpening/maintenance and critical tool holding techniques.

With tutor guidance you will first practising several mark making methods and then apply these to silver sheet to create surface relief channels, or cuts for creating a design sample effective for holding vitreous enamel.

Engraving and Enamelling course information

Day Two

Your tuition focuses on enamelling techniques, enamel type choice, mixing and apply the wet enamel, kiln firing times and temperatures, building colour and creating the correct transparency in your design. You will apply enamel to your engraved sample design, kiln fire this and be shown how to finish your design to ensure the top surface is smooth.

  • The tutor can also provide some pre-engraved samples if these are required to assist your enamelling practice during the course.

Course Aim

The emphasis of this course is to gain a good understanding of the Engraving and Enamelling methods and tool techniques used in order to assist your practice after the course, rather than to create a finished piece of enamelled Jewellery.

 

Materials

Enamel is provided. Silver is not provided because you will be working on your own designs and the amount you might wish to use cannot be determined beforehand, therefore you pay the tutor directly for the amount of silver you use during the course.

 

This course is designed for suitable for Jewellers or Silversmiths interested in adding colour to their work. Some basic knowledge of Enamelling or Engraving is useful but not essential. Enamelling or Engraving beginners are welcome to attend.

Basse Taille Enamelling

Engraved cuts or marks in varying depths to emphasize different shades of the same hue that are filled with vitreous enamel to create a surface design.

 

Champlevé Enamelling

A collection of engraved/carved relief work that create channels in the surface of metal, designed to hold vitreous enamel.

What is the course date?

All private tuition courses are arranged upon request on a date to suit you, subject to tutor availability.

We will provides some course dates for you to choose from or you can ask about a course date of day of the week preference.

About the Course Fee

Courses are priced individually because the course fee is based upon the fee a tutor charges to take a day out their industry/trade work to teach. 

About Materials

Enamel is included but base metal or silver is NOT included. This is because Bespoke Courses are tailored to suit  individual makers needs.

You can bring your own base metal or silver, the tutor can provide guidance before the course or you can pay the tutor direct for what you use on the day.

Booking/Payment Information

Payment is required in advance and payments are handled safely and securely by BACS Bank Transfer invoicing (IBAN SWIFT or Paypal for International students).

Instalments

Some courses are available to pay in instalments, whereby a non-refundable deposit is required to book your course date. Please ask for details if this is of interest to you.

 

Booking Information

  • Once you have booked a cancellation fee of *£95  will be deducted from your refund if you cancel your course up to and including 14 days prior to the start of the course once your payment has been received.

 

  • Cancellations received within 14 days of the course date are not eligible for a refund, however you may re-arrange your course for one other date if you wish. 

 

  • Should we need to cancel your course due to unforeseen circumstances we will refund your course fee in full. Please note, travel and accommodation booked is not eligible for a refund/reimbursement, if you are worried about this we recommend you contact your own Insurer for advice.

* Amount is variable depending on the duration and type of the course.  When you enquire, out quote reply will provide the actual cancellation amount applicable. £95 applies only to a standard one day course.
