This course has been designed and is delivered by a specialist professional Goldsmith and Jewellery Historian who share his expertise and trade secrets with you.

 

Course Description

The aim of this series of course sessions is to help you become an informed buyer, seller or collector of Antique or Vintage Jewellery by providing essential jewellery knowledge.

Each of your 5x 2 Hour online sessions introduces you individually to the basics of these important subject areas;

 

  • Jewellery Design Characteristics

  • Precious Metals/Metallurgy

  • Hallmarking

  • Diamonds

  • Coloured Gemstones

  • ​

Although we recommend undertaking the whole series to gain an overall understanding, you may book each session individually if you wish.

Course Content

​

1. Design Styles through History | Duration 2 hours

Content includes the commonly seen styles and characteristics that indicate the date of specific Jewellery eras. This lecture is an informative introduction to the basic methods for dating Vintage/Antique Jewellery.  You will learn how Jewellery styles provide important clues for determining a date, and the tutor will also reveal the brief historical or social context of certain types of jewellery within their date period.

 

2. Metallurgy | Duration 2 hours

Content includes understanding Precious Metals and their alloys as historically used in the Jewellery industry. Get an introduction to the fascinating world of precious metal and discover more about the origin, formation and properties of precious elements - Silver, Gold and Platinum which have been prized for thousands of years.  Information about carat weight, purity of metals and how this is relevant to current market values can also be included.

 

3. Hallmarking | Duration 2 Hours

Content includes Hallmarks what they are, how to read them and the secrets they can reveal to Jewellery buyers and sellers. Learn about UK Hallmarks; Taxation marks and their importance; what the UK Hallmarking legislation is and how to read a Hallmark to establish the date made and metal type and purity.

 

4. Diamonds | Duration 2 Hours

Content includes a brief introduction to diamonds. Learn more about natural Diamond shapes, cut styles, anatomy and origin etc. NOTE: Diamond identification is a much larger subject matter and is not included in this particular course.

 

5. Coloured Gemstones | Duration 2 Hours

Content includes Sapphires, Emeralds, Rubies and other commonly seen coloured Gemstones. You may request a favourite Gemstone to be included. Obtain an overview of the fascinating world of some of the gemstones most commonly seen in Jewellery, the beauty, history and origin. NOTE: Gemstone identification is a much larger subject matter and is not included in this particular course.

Jewellery is a very large subject area and this course delivers a brief introduction to the subject matter.

The course content is designed to be a starting point for gaining more information about Jewellery when buying or selling Vintage or Antique Jewellery, and / or to inform your understanding before undertaking more in-depth courses of interest such as Gem-A Gemstone or Diamond Identification and Valuation of Gems, Diamonds and Jewellery.

How Does Online Tuition work?

Online courses are one-to-one interactive tuition delivered by the tutor via Zoom conferencing.

You will see and hear the tutor, be able to discuss course content live and view presentations/images etc as applicable.

​

You join free at Zoom.us and the tutor emails you a link to join your one-to-one course session just before the agreed start time.

  • You simply copy the meeting code provided in the link

  • Open Zoom on your PC or Laptop

  • Click join meeting and paste your meeting code into the box provided.

What is the course date?

All private tuition courses are arranged upon request on a date to suit you, subject to tutor availability.

We will provides some course dates for you to choose from or you can ask about a course date of day of the week preference.

About the Course Fee

Where more than one tutor option is advised, ccourses are priced individually because the course fee is based upon the fee a tutor charges to take a day out their industry/trade work to teach. 

About Materials

Standard Gemmology Equipment and Gem materials for evaluation and appraisal are provided by the tutor.

A small tools list is provided for essential items you will use on the course and afterwards as you continue your practise.

ESSENTIAL

You must bring a selection of Jewellery items to use for course methodology practise.

Booking/Payment Information

Payment is required in advance and payments are handled safely and securely by BACS Bank Transfer invoicing (IBAN SWIFT or Paypal for International students).

Instalments

Some courses are available to pay in instalments, whereby a non-refundable deposit is required to book your course date. Please ask for details if this is of interest to you.

 

Booking Information

  • Once you have booked a cancellation fee of *£95  will be deducted from your refund if you cancel your course up to and including 14 days prior to the start of the course once your payment has been received.

 

  • Cancellations received within 14 days of the course date are not eligible for a refund, however you may re-arrange your course for one other date if you wish. 

 

  • Should we need to cancel your course due to unforeseen circumstances we will refund your course fee in full. Please note, travel and accommodation booked is not eligible for a refund/reimbursement, if you are worried about this we recommend you contact your own Insurer for advice.

* Amount is variable depending on the duration and type of the course.  When you enquire, out quote reply will provide the actual cancellation amount applicable. £95 applies only to a standard one day course.
